IAM District Lodge 14 Business Representative/Organizer
IAM Local Lodge 99 Member
(picture taken April 26, 2018)

(March 6, 1965 – November 13, 2021)

It is with great sadness and regret that we inform Brother Jim Patterson passed away on Saturday, November 13, 2021 at the age of 56.

Brother Jim came from IAM Local Lodge 99 and was first elected as a District 14 Business Representative at the April 10, 2017 meeting with the first 4-year term commencing September 1, 2017 and he continued to be an integral part of the District Business Representative team since then.  His quick wit led to much laughter in the office and he was never lacking opinions on anything.  He always seemed to “know someone”.  You need an IT person.  “Hey, I know a guy.”  You need tires.  “Hey, I know a guy.”  He took great pride in his relationships with his wife, kids and other family and friends.  He will be missed by everyone who knew him, including his Union Brothers and Sisters.

Funeral Services to be held at the Glenwood Funeral Home located at 52356 Range Road 232, Sherwood Park, AB (780-467-3337) at 2:00 p.m. Thursday, November 25, 2021.  If you are unable to attend there is going to be a Livestream of the services.

The family has asked that in lieu of flowers, please feel free to make a donation to the Alzheimer’s Society of Canada, or the Edmonton Firefighters Memorial Society.

Note all attendees are required to observe the Alberta’s Restriction Exemption Program, proof of double vaccination.

IAM Canadian Office shares their thoughts.

Rest in Peace Brother.

Leonard Loza
IAM Local Lodge 99 – Retiree
(picture taken March 27, 2018)

(March 19, 1948 – April 26, 2020)

With a sad and heavy heart we advise that Brother Leonard Loza passed away Sunday, April 26, 2020 at the age of 72.

Greg Loza (son) advised that his dad, our brother, passed away peacefully and will be missed by his family and many friends.  Len’s family will be having a grave side service for him.  Unfortunately due to the current coronavirus situation and accompanying regulations there will not be many people allowed to attend.  The family plans to have a memorial service at the Holy Trinity Church once the social distancing situation is over.  R.I.P. Brother Leonard.  We miss you so much each and every day . . .

Glenn Killips, President IAMAW Retirees Association of Alberta (from IAMLL1722)
I met Len Loza around May 1, 1992 when Local Lodge 99 joined the International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers, District Lodge 14.  Since that time he became a leader in his Local and the District, as well as a friend.  After retirement, he wanted to start a retiree group for District Lodge 14.  He convinced me to come to a meeting.  We elected an Executive Board, started to have regular meetings and coffee meetings monthly.  Len also had the camping and fishing trips coordinated for the rest of us to attend.  It is with great sadness to hear of Len’s passing.  I will miss my friend.

Matthew Barnable, Business Representative IAMDL14 (from IAMLL0099)
Brother Leonard Loza was an outspoken unionist who stood up for his beliefs.  He remained an activist even after he put his tools down in retirement.  Unforgettable was Leonard’s vocal support of a group of workers the IAM was trying to unionize.  The passion in which he encouraged our members to support these folks who needed us was incredible.  I enjoyed our chats when he visited the union office and will miss them immensely.  Leonard’s spirit will live on through those who knew him and we must endeavor to pass on his zest for union activism to inspire others, as Leonard did for us.

Howard Ellis-Toddington
IAM Local Lodge 1579 – Retiree
(picture taken July 7, 2005)

(July 7, 1954 – April 18, 2020)

It is with deep sadness that we inform Brother Howard Ellis-Toddington passed away Saturday, April 18, 2020 at the age of 65.

Derek Ellis-Toddington (son) advised that his dad was cremated and they will not be having a service.  Howy wished to be taken to his home town of Moosejaw, Saskatchewan to be laid to rest.  R.I.P. Brother Howy.  You touched so many lives and made us better because we knew you.

Richard Arsenault, Grand Lodge Representative
Howard Ellis-Toddington started his career as a Commercial Sheet Metal Technician in the 1970’s.  When there was a downturn in the oil industry in the 1980’s the government offered cross trades, which enabled Howard to transfer his skill to that of an Aircraft Sheet Metal Technician and he then became a member of the International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers, Local Lodge 1579 (IAMAW Northgate Aircraft Lodge No 1579).

My employment at North West Industries (NWI) started in 1986.  Within a year I became active in the Union and immediately became friends with Howard.  Howard had an easy going nature, which gave him the ability to keep everyone calm during stressful situations. He helped me immensely with my career in the labor movement by taking me under his wing and teaching me that same calmness in dealing with the most stressful situations.  I will always be grateful for that.

Howard became involved with the Union by becoming a Shop Steward and participating on numerous negotiating committees, as well as sitting on the IAMAW District Lodge 14 Executive.  He became the President of IAMAW Local Lodge 1579 in the early 1990’s and held that position until the closure of what started as NWI in June, 2009.  He had guided the local through various company changes from North West Industries (NWI), to CAE Aviation, then Spar Aerospace and finally L-3 Communications, none of which were easy tasks as each company came in with guns a blazing wanting to change everything including the Collective Agreement.  Howard reassured the membership he had it under control and he did.

His sense of humor kept you on your toes and he always had the one liners that broke the ice on the most difficult of situations.  He also enjoyed a good cigar and glass of rum, of which we had many during our years.

It is with heavy heart that I write this for my brother and friend.  You will be missed.  R.I.P. Brother.
