Political Action is one of the easiest things to be a part of. As a person in any riding you are eligible to vote. You need to exercise your right to vote and when you do you should vote for someone who cares about workers issues and has the same values that you do. Someone who will promote your ideals.
Machinist Member wins Young Leader of the Year award!
Toronto, ON – UFCW Canada National Representative and IAM Local Lodge 1922 member, Zenne May Maceda has received the Young Leader of the Year award at the augural Gold Balangay Awards, held in Toronto.
Organized by a number of Filipino community groups, businesses, and non-profit organizations, the awards show was established to celebrate Filipino Canadians who have made a positive impact in their community or field of work. It recognized Sister Maceda as the 2017 Young Leader of the Year for her outstanding efforts in promoting social justice and workers’ rights as a labour activist.
“I am incredibly honoured to be a recipient of the Golden Balangay Young Leader of the Year award,” said Sister Maceda. “This award was given to me in recognition of the work that I do as a young labour advocate, so I know it isn’t only for me. It is for all my friends, family, and colleagues who have committed themselves to fighting for working people in Canada and in the Philippines.”
Machinists back a winner – Singh takes NDP leadership!

Toronto, ON – Jagmeet Singh is the new leader of the federal New Democratic Party with a resounding first-ballot victory by a margin of 53 per cent in the NDP leadership in Toronto Sunday night.
“Earlier last month the IAM endorsed Jagmeet Singh to be our new leader after a vigorous internal debate,” said IAM Canadian General Vice President Stan Pickthall. “At that time we concluded that he was the right person for the job because he most closely represents the values and the direction of IAM. I’m pleased that the rest of the party agrees with us.”
Singh, 38, defeated challengers Niki Ashton, Charlie Angus and Guy Caron. Singh, a criminal defence lawyer who speaks fluent French and Punjabi, has represented the riding of Bramalea-Gore-Malton in the Ontario legislature since 2011. He was named deputy leader of the Ontario NDP in 2015. Singh says he will not immediately seek a seat in the House of Commons until he has had time to increase his profile outside of the House.
Singh has been a frequent visitor to IAM rallies, meetings and demonstrations regarding precarious work, the Fight for a $15 an hour minimum wage, contract flipping and privatization of Canadian airports. “We look forward to working with Jagmeet to build power within the Party as we prepare for the next chapter,” said Pickthall. “Our next battle is in 2019, with the Trudeau Liberals; there is much work to be done along the way.”
Learning to Connect
An informative web page training session was held at the IAM District boardroom on October 3-5, 2017 led by Brother Frank Saptel, IAMAW National Communications Director. Info sharing using WordPress was had by Brother Leo Manrique of Local 2734, Sister Lori Fairbrother of Local 1722, Brother Glenn Killips of Local 1722 and Sister Barb Makey of District 14 to keep the membership updated on current events.

On April 23rd and 24th of 2014 Frank Saptel (Grand Lodge Communications Representative) from Toronto was in Edmonton at the District 14 office instructing Jim Burden (President of LL1681), Rob Nolan (Recording Secretary & Communicator of LL1681), Ryan Ermet (Trustee of Distrcit 14), Barb Makey (District 14 Administrative Assistant) and Dan Uchaz (District 14 Business Representative) on basic web design and the transformation to the “Word Press” platform. Websites have proven to be a very good tool in communicating with our memberships and we would like to thank Frank for making the trip out west to broaden our knowledge and help ensure that our websites continue to be a valuable asset to the membership.
